Hi everyone, we’re EFE Glasses — a brand passionate about eyewear design and protecting your eye health. Every day, we help people choose the perfect lenses, frames, and vision solutions. And during this process, one fascinating question always captures our curiosity: how do our eyes actually see the colorful world around us?
From the first golden light of sunrise to the deep orange of sunset, from spring’s pink blossoms to the emerald green of summer fields — our world bursts with color. Today, we’ll take you on a visual journey to explore how the human eye perceives color and why it’s so important to protect your vision along the way.
The first thing to understand is that color isn’t something that objects “have” — it’s something created by light. When white light (like sunlight) hits an object, some wavelengths are absorbed, and others are reflected. The light that bounces into your eyes is what your brain interprets as color.
Take a bright red rose, for example — it absorbs most wavelengths but reflects red. What you see as “red” is actually your brain interpreting reflected light.
Color perception starts inside the retina, the thin, light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye. The retina contains two key types of photoreceptor cells: rods and cones.
Rod cells help us see in dim lighting — they’re great for detecting brightness but not color.
Cone cells, on the other hand, are responsible for color vision and work best in bright light.
Humans have three types of cone cells:
S-cones (Short) – sensitive to blue light.
M-cones (Medium) – sensitive to green light.
L-cones (Long) – sensitive to red light.
When you look at something — say, a green leaf — each cone type sends a different signal to your brain. Your brain then compares these signals and concludes, “That’s green!”
Your eyes gather light, but it’s your brain that actually “sees” color. The cones in your retina convert light into electrical signals, which travel through the optic nerve to your visual cortex.
Think of your brain as a master color mixer — blending input from all three cone types to create every hue you see.
Here’s how your brain combines them:
Red + Green = Yellow
Blue + Red = Purple
Balanced signals from all three = White
This is the foundation of trichromatic vision, the system that gives humans the ability to perceive millions of shades.
Not everyone experiences color the same way. Some people have color vision deficiency, commonly called color blindness. This happens when one or more cone types don’t function properly.
For example, people with red-green color blindness may struggle to distinguish between those shades because their L-cones or M-cones don’t respond normally.
At EFE Glasses, we understand that everyone’s vision is unique. That’s why our optical experts always consider color sensitivity during the lens selection process. While we don’t make color-corrective lenses, we do design eyewear that enhances visual clarity and comfort, reducing eye strain for all users.
At EFE Glasses, our mission goes beyond simply helping people see clearly — we want you to see beautifully and healthily. Every frame and lens we create is designed with your visual comfort and eye wellness in mind.
From anti-blue light glasses that protect your eyes during long screen hours to UV-blocking lenses that shield you outdoors, our eyewear helps you maintain color accuracy and reduce fatigue.
Whether you’re working at a computer, reading under bright light, or exploring nature’s vivid landscapes, EFE Glasses ensures your eyes experience the world in its truest, most vibrant colors.
The ability to see color is a remarkable gift — a blend of physics, biology, and neural magic. From the wavelengths of light to the cells in your retina, and from your optic nerves to your brain, every part works together to let you enjoy the beauty around you.
At EFE Glasses, we’re honored to be part of your visual journey. With every pair of glasses we design, our goal is to help you protect your eyes, enhance your comfort, and experience the full spectrum of life’s colors.
Let’s continue to see the world clearly, vividly, and joyfully — together with EFE Glasses.
