clean your glasses

1. Wash hands and rinse glasses with warm water

Making sure your hands are clean is the first step in cleaning your glasses, otherwise you risk transferring oils or dirt from your skin to the frames during the cleaning process. It is recommended that you wash your hands with antibacterial soap (lotions and other added ingredients can cause staining) and then dry them with a lint-free towel. Afterward rinse the glasses under warm water. Warm water is best for removing dust and other gunk, but don’t let it get too hot, it could damage any special coatings on the lenses.

2. Use a microfiber cloth to clean the lenses

Be sure to clean your glasses with a microfiber cloth to clean glasses, as the microfiber cloth easily picks up and removes dust, grease, grime, liquids and all germs. When you clean it with a microfiber cloth, it won't leave any lint on your eyeglass lenses. However if using a hard cloth will damage your glasses, you will need to buy new glasses again. So try cleaning your glasses with a microfiber cloth or other proper cleaning material.

3. Clean glasses with rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is best for cleaning eyeglasses because it is safe to use on lens coatings as well as high-quality plastic and metal panels. Rubbing alcohol immediately removes germs and bacteria without any harmful effects.

4. Use a soft toothbrush to clean the frames

To clean the frame, use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Do not apply too much pressure to the toothbrush as it can scratch the lens. Do not use rags, paper towels, shirts or facial tissues to clean the lenses as they contain coarse fibers which can scratch the lenses. Additionally, these items may contain traces of fabric softener, detergent, dust and dirt particles. Using them can damage the lenses of your glasses, causing scratches.

5. Put the glasses in the glasses case

When you're not using your glasses, please put the glasses in the glasses case. Doing this will protect the glasses from any scratches. You can store them in a microfiber pouch or case. Make sure the box has a hard exterior. Other containers for eyeglasses include plastic envelopes, dust containers, bags, or boxes.

What can hurt your glasses?

There are a few common mistakes that people make when cleaning their glasses.

1. Avoid these materials

Paper towels, Kleenex, and the fabric of the shirt you're wearing may seem like an easy fix for dirty lenses. But these materials are too rough and can cause minor scratches on the surface of the lens. Lenses lose clarity over time. You need to stick to a soft lens cloth, like the ones that come in your glasses case.

2. Do not use products containing acetone

Another common mistake is using acetone to clean lenses and frames. This is never a good idea. "Acetone (often found in nail polish remover) can do amazing damage to lenses and plastic eyeglass frames if left on a surface for too long.

3. Saliva does not clean lenses

When you're desperate to get a smudge off your glasses, lubricating the lenses with your own saliva might seem like a good idea. But you're basically covering your lenses with bacteria from your mouth, and the bacteria multiply. From a practical standpoint, your saliva might also make the smudge look worse.
